A tournament director coordinates the event as a whole and ensures that authority, rules, fields, staffing, communication, safety, finances, and decisions work together. The role is service with accountability, not permission to make undocumented exceptions.
This role description supports future planning and does not identify a current Catholic Parish League Phoenix tournament director.
Before registration
Confirm that the league has authority to operate the event, the venue is secured, rules are approved, essential staff are available, costs are understood, and a cancellation or refund approach exists. Marketing should not outrun these facts.
Before the event
- Finalize teams, rosters, schedule, field map, and officials.
- Brief volunteers and define escalation routes.
- Publish family, parking, weather, and venue information.
- Confirm equipment, communication, score reporting, and emergency procedures.
- Review conflicts of interest and decision authority.
During the event
The director monitors operations, delegates appropriately, and records decisions. The director should not interfere with the referee’s authority over the match or resolve complex eligibility and conduct questions through improvised sideline arguments.
When plans fail
Weather, field closure, absence, injury, or delay may require a change. The director needs authority to act within approved policy and the discipline to communicate what is known, what is not, and what happens next.
After the event
Reconcile finances, results, incidents, equipment, permissions, and feedback. Thank people accurately and create a written review so future organizers do not repeat avoidable problems.
Next step
A future event should name the director, define the role, and identify who reviews decisions before registration opens.
Address conflicts of interest
The director may also belong to a parish or team, but competition decisions should not depend on private loyalty. Eligibility, discipline, bracket, and protest matters may need an independent reviewer or a documented multi-person decision.
